Why aren’t we so honored?
For our contributions
Relative to our demographic
Staples of US cuisine came with us from West Africa and indigenous America
Agriculturalists skilled in growing rice, cotton, sugar, and tobacco
Expert animal husbandry and blacksmithing
Our intellectual property produced technology that seeded American wealth
Like the Jack Daniel’s recipe
Minimal cost with maximum returns
Why aren’t we so honored?
Free black people voted in 5 of the 13 states to adopt the constitution itself
If we’re viewed as a whole view the whole story
The first body to drop in the war for independence was one of ours
Fed our genetic code to American babies via wet nursing
Fought valiantly in every American war including the civil one
(A litmus test for Americanness in many eyes)
Demonstrated effective governance in Reconstruction
Mainstreamed civic engagement
Been here longer than most American ethnicities
Why aren’t we so honored?
Love the museum and the Amazon prime offerings
The day off for Juneteenth
But it’s more about economic inclusion
Seems reasonable
Considering all of the above
A glimpse of the intricate detail
Leads one to wonder
